Name

Castor Oil

Generally safe as used

Description

Castor oil is the oil extracted from the castor bean. It can ben solvent-extracted or cold-pressed.

Benefits

Skin moisturizing. Used in herbal medicine for hair growth and to treat menstrual pain or irregularities. Can also be used as a laxative. (Please consult a health care professional before using castor oil for medicinal use.) Castor oil’s principle component, ricinoleic acid, has been shown to stimulate the production of Prostaglandin (PGE2) when applied to the scalp and encourages regeneration of hair. However, the ricinoleic acid is bound to the triglyceride in castor oil, so applying castor oil to scalp may not have this effect. The ricinoleic acid has to be broken from the triglyceride and extracted to be active. This happens in the digestive system and its actions on prostaglandins may explain its laxative properties.

Considerations

•Ethical Concerns The castor seed contains the poison ricin. Castor oil mash can pollute the environment. Castor oil mash can be sold to terrorist organizations and individuals. Allergens and toxins in the plant can cause harm to workers. • Genetic Modification Castor seed oil can be GMO. Choose organic to avoid genetically modified castor oil. • Digestive Upset Can cause vomiting and diarrhea if ingested.
