Name

Avobenzone

We recommend avoiding

Description

Avobenzone iis a chemical sunscreen agent that absorbs ultraviolet (UV) light, specifically UVA rays. It is known to be less stable when exposed to sunlight, which can reduce its effectiveness over time. To enhance its stability, avobenzone is often combined with other sunscreen ingredients that help to stabilize it, such as octocrylene. Avobenzone is a derivative of dibenzoylmethane and is also known by its chemical name, 1-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)propane-1,3-dione.

Benefits

UV blocking effects.

Considerations

• Pregnancy Complications Some research suggests that avobenzone may lead to pregnancy complications and/or birth defects. • Environmental Concerns Very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. • Obesogen Some research suggests avobenzone may interfere with cell signaling and acts as an obesogen. • Endocrine Disruptor Some studies have found avobenzone to have anti-testosterone properties on males in animal studies. It has been found to be weakly estrogenic.
