Name

Hydrogenated polydecene

Has some considerations

Description

Hydrogenated polydecene is a polymer, specifically a “vinyl-type copolymer,” that appears as a transparent oily liquid. An emollient used in skincare products to soften and moisturize the skin. It reduces transepidermal water loss, helping to lock in moisture and create a comfortable, non-greasy skin feel. It is a polymer made of 1-decene. Hydrogenated polydecene is made from ethylene gas extracted from petroleum. Ethylene gas is first made in to decene, which is then polymerized and hydrogenated.

Benefits

Forms a non-occlusive film on the skin, allowing for breathable moisturization. Softens and smooths skin, reducing roughness and scaling Locks in moisture without occluding the skin. Reduces transepidermal water loss, helping to maintain skin hydration. Can provide a silky, velvety sensation on the skin.

Considerations

• Contamination Concerns Because hydrogenated polydecene is derived from petroleum, it has the potential to be contaminated with polyaromatic hydrocarbons, a class of carcinogenic chemicals. However, refinement methods may remove these contaminants. • Skin Irritation Case of skin irritation are rare but possible. • Skin Occlusion Hydrogenated polydecene may be comedogenic due to its occlusive properties.
