Description

Cocamide DEA is a foaming/detergent agent. Cocamide DEA is created by reacting coconut fatty acids with a chemical called diethanolamine. Diethanolamine is created is made by reacting ethylene oxide and ammonia.It is used as an emollient, thickener, foam stabilizers and dispersion aid in shampoos, hair dyes, and bath additives.

Considerations

• Contamination Concerns Because diethanolamine is created by combining ethylene oxide and ammonia, traces of ethylene oxide (a carcinogen) can remain in the product, as well as its carcinogenic by-product 1,-4 dioxide. Because Cocamide DEA is an amide, it also has the potential for being contaminated with or forming a class of carcinogenic chemicals called nitrosamines under certain conditions. Cocamide DEA can also contain free diethanolamide either from original processing or as a by-product that releases over time. It's estimated that Cocamide DEA can contain 1-33% diethanolamide. Diethanolamide is a suspected blood toxin, liver toxin, kidney toxin, neurotoxin, and carcinogen. • Contact Allergen Uncommon, but it can be a contact allergen in some individuals. • Skin Irritation Animal studies showed incidences of epidermal and sebaceous gland hyperplasia, hyperkeratosis, chronic inflammation, and parakeratosis at the site of application.
